Meeting and Managing Your Goal Weight

If you’ve been diagnosed with Diabetes, your doctor may advise you to lose some weight. We help you do just that.

Find out what you like
One of the best ways to meet and manage your goal weight is to get some exercise. Regular, moderate exercise is the rule for everyone! But, if the thought of joining a gym or signing up to some class makes you cringe, fear not: there is an exercise out there, suitable for you. Online classes for just about any exercise type can be found with a simple search or explore your neighbourhood to see what’s on offer. From weight training to ballet, to volleyball and more: all movement matters.

Don’t fixate on the numbers
Your doctor, nurse, or dietitian will help you create an eating and exercise plan that will help you meet your goal weight. But this is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. While that goal weight may be your objective, bear in mind that you’ll need to maintain it beyond then too. As best you can, try not to fixate on the numbers, and focus instead on incremental progress that helps you meet, and manage, your goal weight.

Your diet
Remember: your doctor, nurse, or dietitian is best suited to help you navigate towards your goal weight. While it may be tempting to immediately start a fad diet so you can achieve those quick goals, maintaining your weight needs to be a lifestyle choice, and not a once-off goal. Once you’ve been diagnosed, your doctor will advise you on your treatment plan, your medication, and other requirements. Pay attention to your:

  • Meal frequency: when you eat is as important as what you eat when you’re Diabetic. Maintaining a stable blood glucose level is important. It’s doubly important for Diabetics to eat breakfast every day. This helps you curb overeating during the day and manage your blood glucose levels.
  • Meal contents: Cutting down on sugar and focusing on your fresh fruit and vegetable intake is important.
  • Meal sizes: Keeping a close eye on your portions is key for losing weight and maintaining your health.
  • Doctor’s recommendations: While general rules can apply, your doctor or dietitian will advise you on how much you should eat, of each food type, every day.

Speak to your doctor
As always, when it comes to your health, always speak to your doctor, nurse, or other members of your health care team. Your doctor may be able to help you with advice and guidance on how to meet and manage your goal weight, with your unique personal circumstances in mind.
